Oreo Coal Recipe

4.6 from 119 reviews

Oreo Coal is a fun and indulgent no-bake treat that combines crushed Oreo cookies and melted marshmallows into bite-sized balls. These sweet, chewy snacks resemble coal in appearance and are perfect for parties, holiday gatherings, or as a nostalgic snack. The recipe is quick to prepare, using simple ingredients and stovetop melting techniques for the marshmallows and butter.

Ingredients

Scale

Oreo Mixture

  • 48 Oreos (from one family-size package), divided

Marshmallow Mixture

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 3 1/2 cups mini marshmallows (about 7 oz.)
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Crush Majority of Oreos: Place 38 Oreos in a plastic bag. Using a rolling pin or heavy skillet, crush them into a fine powder. Transfer this crushed Oreo powder to a large bowl for mixing.
  2. Prepare Remaining Oreos: Scrape the frosting off the remaining 10 Oreos and discard the frosting or enjoy as a snack. Place the Oreo wafers into the same plastic bag and crush them into a fine powder as well.
  3. Melt Butter and Marshmallows: In a large, heavy skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the mini marshmallows along with the kosher salt, and cook while whisking constantly until the marshmallows are fully melted and smooth, approximately 1 minute.
  4. Combine Oreo Powder and Marshmallow Mixture: Using a rubber spatula, mix the crushed Oreos from the bowl (38 crushed Oreos) into the melted marshmallow mixture until well combined. Then scrape the combined mixture into a medium bowl and allow it to cool slightly so it’s easier to handle.
  5. Form Oreo Balls and Coat: Scoop the Oreo mixture into balls about 2 tablespoons each. Roll each ball in the remaining crushed Oreos powder from the bag (the 10 Oreos without frosting). Arrange the coated balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them sit for about 10 minutes before serving to firm up.

Notes

  • Make sure to let the marshmallow mixture cool slightly before forming balls to avoid burning your hands.
  • If you want a firmer texture, refrigerate the Oreo Coal balls for 15-20 minutes before serving.
  • These treats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerated for longer freshness.
  • For a twist, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or a splash of vanilla extract into the marshmallow mixture while melting.
