4.5 from 114 reviews

A simple and healthy method to cook Brussels sprouts by simmering them until tender, preserving their vibrant green color and natural flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 750g Brussels sprouts, trimmed and large ones halved or quartered
  • Water, a couple of centimeters
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Brussels Sprouts: Trim the Brussels sprouts by removing any tough outer leaves and cutting larger sprouts in half or quarters to ensure even cooking.
  2. Add Water and Salt: Place the Brussels sprouts in a large pan to avoid overcrowding. Add a couple of centimeters of water and a pinch of salt to the pan.
  3. Simmer: Cover the pan and bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook the sprouts for 3 to 5 minutes depending on their size.
  4. Test for Doneness: Use a sharp knife to poke a sprout to check if it is cooked through. If not, continue cooking for a few more minutes and test again.
  5. Drain and Serve: Once cooked, drain the water from the pan and transfer the Brussels sprouts to a bowl for serving.

Notes

  • Using a large pan helps prevent the sprouts from steaming unevenly by not piling them up too high.
  • Do not overcook to maintain a firm texture and bright green color.
  • For added flavor, consider tossing the cooked sprouts with butter, garlic, or lemon zest.
