Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or buttermilk)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • ¼ cup milk or cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract; whisk until smooth and fully blended.
  4. Blend batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently just until combined, avoiding overmixing to keep the cake tender.
  5. Bake cake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then carefully remove and transfer to wire racks to cool completely before frosting.
  7. Prepare frosting: Cream the unsalted butter until soft. Gradually beat in cocoa powder and powdered sugar alternately with milk, mixing until smooth and spreadable.
  8. Frost cake: Once cakes are completely cooled, spread frosting evenly between the layers and over the top and sides to finish.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs and butter for best mixing results.
  • Do not overmix batter to keep the cake moist and tender.
  • Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute buttermilk for milk.
  • Store the finished cake covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • You can add a pinch of espresso powder to intensify the chocolate flavor.
