Scale

Cornbread Dressing Ingredients

  • 6 cups crumbled cornbread (preferably slightly stale)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian option)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the chopped onions and celery, and sauté until they are softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the crumbled cornbread. Pour in the sautéed vegetables, broth, beaten eggs, dried sage, thyme, parsley, salt, and pepper. Gently stir everything together until the mixture is evenly moistened but not soggy.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or similar sized casserole dish.
  4. Transfer and Bake: Pour the cornbread mixture into the prepared baking dish, pressing it down lightly to create an even layer. Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the dressing to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This will help it firm up slightly for clean servings.

Notes

  • For best results, use slightly stale cornbread as it absorbs the broth better without becoming mushy.
  • To make it vegetarian, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth.
  • You can add cooked sausage or chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.
  • Adjust herbs and seasoning according to taste preferences.
  • Dressing can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated before baking.
