Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 box Cheddar Bay biscuit mix (11.36 ounces)
  • 16 ounces breakfast sausage
  • 16 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ¼ cup milk (as needed)

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 seasoning packet (included with Cheddar Bay biscuit mix)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350˚F (175˚C) to prepare for baking the sausage balls.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the Cheddar Bay biscuit mix, breakfast sausage, and shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Use your hands to work the mixture thoroughly until it starts to hold together. If the mixture feels too dry, add milk gradually to moisten the dough and help it bind better.
  3. Form Sausage Balls: Take a small handful of dough, squeeze tightly to bring it together, then roll it between your hands to shape a 2-inch diameter ball. Repeat this process until you have formed about 32 sausage balls.
  4. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the sausage balls roughly ½ inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. They will slightly expand during baking but can be placed fairly close together.
  5. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until the sausage balls are cooked through and golden on the outside.
  6. Prepare Garlic Butter: Mix the melted butter with the seasoning packet provided in the biscuit mix until well combined.
  7. Brush Sausage Balls: When the sausage balls come out of the oven, immediately brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture to impart a delicious buttery garlicky flavor.

Notes

  • If the dough is too wet, avoid adding too much milk as it can make the sausage balls soggy.
  • Use sharp cheddar for a stronger, tangy flavor, but mild cheddar can be substituted if preferred.
  • For best results, use fresh breakfast sausage and shred your own cheese for optimal melting.
  • These sausage balls can be reheated in an oven or microwave but are best served warm fresh from the oven.
  • They can be frozen uncooked and baked directly from frozen by adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
